The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, President Gwang-hyung Lee) held a ‘Metaverse Daejeon’ vision declaration ceremony at Hotel Onoma in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon on the afternoon of the 14th.

KAIST Metaverse Graduate School (Chief Professor Woo Woon-taek) has developed a future vision of connecting the world into one city through Metaverse and meeting, communicating, and collaborating with citizens around the world under the vision of ‘Metaverse Daejeon: All metaverse paths lead to Daejeon.’ I put it in.

To realize this vision, we plan to select ‘Meta-War’ as the research topic for the next 10 years and establish the ‘Post Metaverse Research Center (PMRC)’ at New York University to use it as an open collaborative research platform.

PMRC, scheduled to be installed in the second half of 2024, will conduct research on the ‘Metamuseum’ that utilizes the characteristics of the Metaverse as an ‘extended virtual world’ that transcends the constraints of time and space to connect people from all over the world and share new experiences.

‘Meta Museum’ is the first representative project of ‘Meta Daejeon’, and when Daejeon citizens visit the KAIST Art Museum, they can enjoy exhibits from the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and establish a platform where they can watch performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall at the KAIST auditorium. This is research.

To this end, the core technological capabilities of KAIST and New York University are integrated, and the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) platform technology, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) XR collaboration platform and supercomputer and high-speed network, and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology’s virtual construction. The goal is to combine technologies to make a futuristic metaverse a reality.

Furthermore, the vision of ‘Metaverse Daejeon’ is to present a model of a future city that connects all parts of the world, crossing the limits of time and space by augmenting the metaverse by adding the capabilities of the Oriental Medicine Research Institute to build a platform to maintain and manage the health of citizens around the world. This is the ultimate direction.

The vision declaration ceremony was attended by about 100 graduate students and Daejeon citizens, including KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung, ETRI Director Bang Seung-chan, KISTI Director Kim Jae-soo, Oriental Medicine Research Institute Director Lee Jin-yong, Daejeon Sejong Research Institute Director Kim Young-jin, and representatives and officials from related government-funded research institutes and companies.

Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo delivered a congratulatory speech through a video, saying, “Daejeon is a world-recognized scientific capital, and like the slogan that the path to all metaverses leads to Daejeon, Daejeon should be the center of all national strategic technologies in Korea.”

In addition, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York University President Linda Mills also delivered video congratulatory remarks.

Professor Woo Woon-taek, who leads Metaverse Graduate School, said, “We will realize the dream of ‘Meta-Daejeon’ by starting with sharing cultural and artistic experiences through an open industry-academia-research international collaborative research platform and expanding the application area to fields such as education, medicine, and industry. “He expressed his expectations.

KAIST President Gwang-Hyung Lee said, “What technology we use to see the world changes the world, and innovation in the way we see evolves our world,” adding, “Metaverse is a new way to experience the world through the eyes of imagination and a way to change our lives.” “It will have a big impact,” he said.
