Kalamata: Maria Athanasopoulou died – She was rescued when she was 10 days old in the great earthquake of Kalamata 2024-04-15 08:19:09

Maria, although she managed to get out alive, all these years of her life she faced serious health problems. She did not emerge from the wreckage completely unscathed. The rescuers found her conscious, but she had a large wound on her neck from an iron.

“I was in my crib. What saved me was the iron from the mosquito net, which, however, entered my neck. They thought I was dead, my parents found out from the news that I’m alive,” she said on the show Truths with Zina in 2023, a few weeks after the birth of her first child and on the occasion of the devastating earthquake in Turkey.

Maria’s father stood by her side all these years as mother and father. He raised her with a lot of love. As she claimed, she may have survived in the ruins, but the fact that she was left without oxygen, water and food for so many hours caused her many health problems.

“She was in the wreckage for 26 hours, she had a deep scar on her neck that left her with problems, she never developed properly,” her father told the show after her death, adding: “The doctors never understood what she had. He had symptoms of multiple sclerosis, but he did not suffer from the disease. He was taking a lot of medication, had unbearable headaches, instability and epilepsy.”

38-year-old Eleni “ran away” on April 5 at her home, where she was with her child, while she was three months pregnant. He suffered a severe seizure with rigidity and never recovered.
