Keeper Marc-André ter Stegen: Which Barça star is difficult to replace – SOCCER

Now the Barça keeper speaks!

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”, Marc-André ter Stegen (30) talks about FC Barcelona and Germany’s performance at the World Cup.

In 2014, Ter Stegen moved from Gladbach to FC Barcelona for €12m. Since then, the national player has played 346 games for the Catalans – has matured into one of the best goalkeepers in the world as a Champions League winner.

In an interview with “Mundo Deportivo”, Ter Stegen talks about the resignation of his long-time teammate Gerard Piqué (35): “He was a very important person for the dressing room. It’s difficult to compensate for that. But now a few more experienced players need to fill the gap.”

Pique surprisingly announced his immediate retirement from football in the middle of the season. He made his last game in November.

And further: “It’s the perfect time for everyone to get involved. I challenge all my teammates to take a step forward. It is not necessary to wear the napkin but to be an important person in the dressing room.”

Ter Stegen also about …

… the early German World Cup exit: “It’s not easy to say now whether it was because of this or that, but I think that as a team, especially in the first game, which we controlled very well and which we ended up losing 2-1 to Japan could have done a little more. (…) Then we had to play against Spain, who have a great team. In the end we just missed out on Spain.”

… his future role in the national team: “Of course I would like to play more, but you also have to say that Manu (Manuel Neuer; editor’s note) has done a great job for the German national team over the years, you shouldn’t forget that, not even them Successes. I try to do my best at Barça so that I can offer solutions to the coach when he has other ideas. I’m here to work hard and fight for the job.”

… Summer signing Robert Lewandowski (34/already 18 goals in 19 competitive games): “Above all, we want the newcomers to settle in quickly and we try to help everyone. Since he speaks German in this case, it’s easier to get him to adapt quickly. I think he’s doing great, both football-wise and personally. I think he’s very happy here, he’s very enthusiastic. I can see that he wants to be successful here and show his quality.”
