North Korea’s state news agency (KCNA) published photographs of Kim Jong-un, who attended training maneuvers and even personally drove the new tank. Kim reportedly expressed great satisfaction with the striking power and maneuverability of the new combat vehicle, calling the tank “the most powerful in the world.” Moreover, Pyongyang disseminated these messages at a time when Seoul and Washington are also conducting Freedom Shield military exercises, Arirang reports.

North Korea has unveiled its new battle tank, which Kim Jong-un has described as “the most powerful in the world.” As Seoul and Washington conduct joint military exercises Freedom Shield, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) published photographs of Kim driving a new North Korean tank during the exercises held the day before. He reportedly expressed great satisfaction with the combat vehicle’s striking power and maneuverability, emphasizing the need to prepare for war.

Reports also suggest that this tank is an upgraded version of the one unveiled by the North Korean regime during a military parade in October 2020.

The KPA includes one tank corps (consisting of three tank divisions) and 15 tank brigades. The tank corps has five tank regiments (each with 4 battalions of heavy tanks, 1 battalion of light tanks, 1 battalion of motorized infantry, 2 battalions of self-propelled guns).

The basis of the KPA tank formations are the main battle tanks T-62 and T-54/55, as well as the Chinese Type 59. The fleet of light tanks consists of the M-1975 of its own design, the Soviet PT-76 and the Chinese Type 62 and Type 63. The domestic tank M- 1985 is considered the largest amphibious tank in the world.

Developed in the DPRK on the basis of the Soviet T-62 MBT, the Cheongmaho tank is capable of moving along steep slopes and fording rivers up to 5.5 m deep. About 1 thousand tanks of five different modifications have been produced in the DPRK. One of the most secret tanks in the world, the Pokphoonho tank, was created on the basis of the T-72, and its characteristics are close to the Russian T-90. Presumably, the tank has a souped-up engine and increased mobility.
