At least two people were killed in an attack on the Ismaili center in Lisbon on Tuesday, the Portuguese police said. CNN Portugal reported that the alleged perpetrator, an Afghan national, was armed with a large knife. He was shot and arrested. The Portuguese police did not confirm the nationality of the alleged perpetrator for the time being.
Prime Minister Antonio Costa said everything indicated that it was an “isolated act”. It was “premature” to interpret the crime.
The Ismailis are a minority faction within Shia Islam whose members have been targeted by extremist groups in countries like Pakistan.
