Korea Philip Morris Hosts Happy Ssdam Day in Seoul

Korea Philip Morris is hosting the “Happy Ssdam Day” citizen-participation eco-friendly campaign in the Seongsu-dong area of Seongdong-gu, Seoul, from October 30 to 31, as reported by Jobpost. The initiative combines urban environmental cleanup with public awareness, allowing participants to act as “Ssdam Detectives” to collect litter and cigarette butts while mapping waste distribution.

The “Ssdam Detective” Experience and Urban Waste Mapping

Participants take on the role of "Ssdam Detectives" to survey the Seongsu-dong district, recording the specific types of discarded waste and the locations where they are found. This data feeds directly into a "trash mapping" display at the pop-up venue located at 42 Seoulsup 2-gil, highlighting high-concentration litter zones.

The campaign operates on October 30 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and on October 31 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Alongside the cleanup operations, the pop-up space features upcycling and reforming workshops, environmental tarot card stations, and the “Momoa” resource circulation zone. The Momoa program targets adult participants specifically to educate them on proper waste separation techniques and municipal disposal standards.

Expanding Long-Term Environmental Outreach Initiatives

Hong-seok Lee, CEO of Korea Philip Morris, emphasized the core objective of the program, stating that the initiative aims to provide citizens with a natural opportunity to observe local environmental issues firsthand and experience the impact of small, daily actions.

This event builds upon the organization’s historical environmental campaigns. Between 1998 and 2019, Korea Philip Morris organized volunteer efforts at major beaches across the country to collect marine debris and cigarette butts, aiming to raise vacationers’ awareness of coastal pollution. More recently, the organization executed the “Ssdam Filter Campaign” in Seoul’s Dongjak-gu district, where participants cleared blocked drainages of accumulated cigarette butts and painted murals to discourage illegal dumping ahead of the monsoon season.
