The ministry has convened the Space Risk Countermeasures Headquarters headed by First Vice Minister Oh Tae-seok to prepare for contingencies.
According to the Korea Astronomical Research Institute’s analysis as of 4:00 am on the 9th, there is a high possibility that the satellite will fall between 0:20 pm and 1:20 pm on the same day. The Korean Peninsula is included in the fall prediction range.
According to the ministry, the satellite is expected to burn up due to frictional heat when re-entering the atmosphere and most of it will disappear. However, some of the wreckage may fall over a wide area, so caution is required in the area. If you find an object suspected of being wreckage, do not touch it and call the fire department.
The falling earth observation satellite weighs 2450 kilograms. Launched in 1984, it has been responsible for observation and analysis of the thermal radiation distribution of the earth. NASA reported on the 7th that the satellite would re-enter the Earth, explaining that “the chance of doing harm somewhere on Earth is 1 in 9,400.”
