MEMBER of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Democratic Faction, Rezka Oktoberia, brought up the running of the husband of the Indonesian KPU Commissioner, Betty Espilon Idroos, in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada). This was conveyed by Rezka in a hearing held on Tuesday (10/9).

“The integrity and neutrality of the KPU, although only they and God know, but I as a partner must convey it,” said Rezka at the DPR RI Building.

“One of the commissioner’s extended family is competing in the 2024 Pilkada, (namely) Mrs. Betty’s husband,” he continued.

Rezka requested that Betty’s husband’s nomination be noted in this RDP. The reason is, Betty is a member of the KPU at the central level. It is known that Betty’s husband is Zulkarnain Awat Amir who is listed as a prospective candidate for the Central Maluku regent in the 2024 Pilkada.

“If indeed while the regional election stages are underway, he is inactive, we will deactivate him. What will happen in the future? Don’t let there be any findings that become homework for the DKPP,” said Rezka, proposing.

Betty herself did not attend the RDP. However, the Chairman of the Indonesian KPU Mochammad Afifuddin said that since May 2024, Betty has resigned as the Maluku Regional Coordinator (Korwil). According to him, Betty has also declared that she will not be involved in decision-making related to her husband’s candidacy.

“She has declared that she will not be involved in decisions if they are related to the region where her husband is running. And we all know about this,” Afifuddin emphasized.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives Ahmad Doli Kurnia emphasized that the most important thing about Zulkarnain’s nomination as Betty’s husband in the 2024 Pilkada contest is the formal or legal aspect. For him, all parties must monitor this.

Moreover, Doli said the potential to exploit one’s position could not only be done by the husband or wife of a KPU RI commissioner, but all parties. Therefore, he invited all stakeholders in the 2024 Pilkada to jointly monitor this matter.

“It is not necessarily the husband or wife of the organizer, if they do not supervise, they can also abuse their authority. So we are placed the same in front of the law and regulations,” he said. (Z-8)
