Kylian Mbappé, the real cancellation and the eternal PSG knockout: simply absurd

MUNICH. And failed again. Paris Saint-Germain has been there since taking over the Qatari investor group Qatar Sports Investments for new stars almost 1.6 billion euros on the transfer market, only to not have won a single Champions League title twelve years later and in the showcase. After a 0:1 in the first leg and a 0:2 in the second leg of the round of 16 against a superior FC Bayern, the series champion of Ligue 1 also failed again. The highest of feelings: Participation in the lost final against Munich in the 2019/20 season (0: 1).

Only last season PSG were eliminated in the round of 16 after a 1-0 and 1-3 draw at Real Madrid. At the club, the Kylian Mbappe two and a half months later, a refusal was suddenly to be given. At the time of the duels in the premier class, everything and everyone was still assuming a free transfer of the French top star in the summer of 2022, in May he – poured out with hundreds of millions of euros in earnest money and salary from Qatar – finally caused a big surprise, by extending in Paris.

Despite all the uproar, Real won the handle cup a few days later at the Stade de France against Liverpool FC. From Mbappé’s environment it was said that winning the title would support the decision in favor of PSG: Real wins the premier class even without him, so it is much more motivated to land this big coup with PSG and create something historic.

But the reality is different. Or just: still the same. The Parisians can only dream of triumphing in the most prestigious club competition in world football. In view of their ongoing failure beyond their own national borders, Mbappé’s rejection of his supposed dream club Real seems all the more absurd.

How long is this going to go on? How long will the 24-year-old, whose world-class quality is undoubtedly destined for more than just Ligue 1 and the early stages of the knockout phase in international business, continue to do so?

“For how much longer? I don’t know that. At the moment I’m talking about the current season, that’s the most important thing. I don’t care about anything else. We lost to a great team and now we hope to win the league.”, the attacker told reporters after his rather pale performance in the Allianz Arena. Despite PSG’s continued failures in Europe, he doesn’t want to reconsider his future, he replied to a related question. “No no no no. I am relaxed. The only thing that concerns me this season is winning the championship. After that we’ll see”, according to Mbappé. What will you see?

It was only at the weekend that the 2018 world champion and 2022 runner-up made it clear that he would not make his future dependent on his performance in the Champions League. But he certainly won’t try it with Paris forever either, especially since the squad will be pretty average and he could become a lonely superstar.

Mbappé himself is apparently only tied to the club until June 30, 2024. A new term until 2025 was officially named for the extension, but in truth he is said to have only committed himself to two more seasons and therefore have the unilateral option to extend the contract by an additional year. According to this status, the rich Parisians could only take a mega transfer this summer.

With Catalina Miñarro Brugarolas said the only woman on the Blancos board a few weeks ago: “At Florentino (Pérez) I’m not ruling anything out. If he has to come and it’s the club’s criteria, he will come. And if not, then he will not come and others will.”

A transfer deal between Real and PSG is difficult to imagine due to the broken relationship, reports about Mbappé and a possible Real engagement are likely to increase again after his knockout in the Champions League. Either way: This name will probably be buzzing over the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu for some time to come…
