Eight migrants died, including a young girl, 23 survivors and a currently unknown number of missing people. This is the outcome of the latest tragedy at sea which occurred in the evening about thirty miles south-west of Lampedusa, in Maltese Sar (the area of competence and rescue) waters.
A patrol boat from the Lampedusa Coast Guard rescued the migrants, who were on board a small boat at the mercy of the stormy sea.
After the small boat capsized and sank, the military of the harbor office, despite the prohibitive weather conditions, managed to collect around thirty castaways.
Some of them were already dead, like the little girl, others died of hypothermia on the Coast Guard unit during the journey at full speed towards the Favaloro pier.
The patrol boat, which docked around 9.30pm, disembarked eight bodies and 23 survivors, including five women, many of whom were in critical health conditions and were immediately assisted by the medical team present on the dock. According to their story there is still an unknown number of missing people.
