Last April ranked among the warmest on record.

The average air temperature in Latvia in April was +7.2 degrees, which is 1.1 degrees above the monthly norm. April was also this warm in 1994, 2008 and 2014.

During the month, 74 new records of maximum daily air temperature were recorded, of which 73 were recorded in the first ten days of the month. The previous national record for maximum daily air temperature, set on April 10, was broken by eight degrees.

On April 9, the first +25 degrees were reached. This is eight days earlier than the previous record, set on April 17, 1999. The temperature of +27 degrees on April 10 is also the earliest on record.

Last April was full of contrasts in terms of weather. There were heavy rains in many places, and snow fell at the beginning and end of the month. In some places the snow cover reached 11 centimeters. At the beginning of the month, dust from the Sahara Desert hung in the air and fog was common.

April was also the fifth wettest on record. The total amount of precipitation in Latvia in April was 70.4 millimeters, which is 97% above the norm for this month. The most precipitation fell in Daugavpils – 142.9 millimeters, and the least in Jelgava – 30.7 millimeters.

This year, some species of migratory birds returned to Latvia much earlier.
