In the film Match Point, Woody Allen uses the metaphor of the tennis ball hitting the net, the difference between winning or losing depending on which field it lands on, to talk about the presence of chance in decisive moments in life. This is how they must have felt 15 students from Faculty of Health Sciences from University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) that, thanks to the decision to expand the places in the Medicine degree this year from 135 to 150, they have been able to enter at the last moment the career for which they have fought so hard, and from which they had been left out until a few weeks ago in the absence of a tenth in the grade obtained after the EBAU.

It is the case of Victor Pentón del Toro, who had been trying to obtain a degree in Medicine since last year. «It was lucky that they expanded those 15 places, because last year I didn’t get the grade and I enrolled in Physiotherapy Since many of the subjects I was going to take were validated, I passed them and repeated the EBU This year, the optional subjects of Biology and Chemistry to get a higher grade, but I did not manage to pass the cut-off grade, which was 12.9 and I had a 12.85.

He assures that it was a disappointment to be left out again, but he enrolled in the second year of Physiotherapy to continue taking subjects that could later validate him in Medicine, because he never thought about throwing in the towel in his endeavor to be a doctor. “On the third day of classes in Physiotherapy, suddenly I received a message that I had entered Medicine, I didn’t believe it, I was shocked, I had achieved it,” says the young man from Las Palmas de GranCanaria, who has always had his vocation is clear, perhaps influenced by the example of his father, who is a doctor. After the first year of Physiotherapy, five subjects are validated, with which he considers the effort well spent on his path to Medicine. “Now the goal is to go course by course and enjoy the career that I have always wanted to do.”

Víctor Pentón: «On the third day in Physiotherapy they told me that I could enter Medicine, I was shocked»

A Fatima Sosanatural from Galdar, the news that she was entering Medicine was received at home, after a day of classes in Nursing, a degree that she had started two weeks ago, when she was one tenth away from the grade to access Medicine. «I had heard that they were calling some colleagues because of the increase in places, but I had already lost hope. I started in Nursing with the idea of taking the first course and re-applying to the EBAU to raise my grade next year. But when I got home and saw the email telling me I was going into medicine, it was super exciting, I hugged my mother and started crying, because it was something I had always wanted to do. The daughter of a nurse, she came into contact with the healthcare field from a young age, “and I also watched all the series that existed about doctors and nurses, so mine is a pure and simple vocation.” In fact, she considered the idea of going to another University, “but I still didn’t feel ready to move away from my family and in the end I chose to enroll in Nursing.”

Unlike Víctor, who prefers to go step by step before opting for a specialization, Fátima is clear that she would like to dedicate herself to Neurosurgery, although she is aware that the road ahead is long. “The important thing is that I’m already in, and my mother has seen me fulfill a dream, since I was little she drove my family crazy telling them that she wanted to be a doctor.”

“Being inside is a dream, since I was little I drove my family crazy saying I wanted to be a doctor,” says Fátima Sosa

“A great achievement”

Dara Castellano, from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was 0.08 short of the cut-off mark for Medicine, which was a downturn for him, after having worked so hard during the two years of Baccalaureate to access these studies. «The fact of finally being able to enter, thanks to the increase in those 15 places, means a great achievement, since since I started high school I have been working a lot and making an effort to achieve it. At first, I was very discouraged, and when they told me that I was coming in, it was very exciting, finally so much effort had been worth it.

At first, Dara enrolled in a degree in Nursing, because she considered it to be the career that most resembled Medicine. «I started going to class with an open mind, so that if I liked Nursing I would stay there, and if not, I would repeat the EBAU, to try to raise my grade. But one day I was at the University waiting to enter a class and they called me to say that I was going to study Medicine, I was shocked, the first thing I did was call my mother.

“When they told me it was very exciting, finally so much effort had been worth it,” said Dara Castellano.

It was also a surprise for Sara Fernandez, who this year was less than a tenth away from entering Medicine and, although at first he considered going to another University, he finally decided to enroll in Physiotherapy at the ULPGC so as not to lose the year and try again next year. «Thanks to the fact that they expanded the places, I have been able to start this year, because if there is one thing I have always been clear about, it is that Medicine is my vocation. It was a big surprise to enter, in fact I had already assumed that it was going to be a difficult year, so very cool,” said the young woman from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The four, together with Victoria Deniz y Adriana Oreguiwere received last week by the rector Lluis Serra Majemand the vice-rector for Students, Alumni and Employability, David Sánchez, at the institutional headquarters of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Serra told them about the decision to increase the 15 places, going from 135 to 150, thanks to the support and financing of the Ministry of Health, so that this year the ULPGC receives 137 students from the province of Las Palmas in the Medicine classrooms, six from the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and seven from the rest of Spain. Among the last 15 students who have had the opportunity to access, there are 11 from Las Palmas and four from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

In the case of the ULPGC, the Ministry announced that it will transfer next November around 714.000 euroswhich will be allocated to the funds of the Faculty of Health Sciences to cover all those priority actions that the center itself communicates to the Management of the university institution.
