MIAMI | In his third season in Formula 1, Nicholas Latifi is having a difficult start to 2022.
So much so that rumors suggest that he could lose his wheel within the Williams team as soon as the British Grand Prix is held. This stopover will take place after that of Montreal next July.
The Torontonian is one of only two drivers on the grid to not have scored a point after the first four stages of the season. The other being Mick Schumacher, color holder of the American team Haas.
What’s more, Latifi has been dominated this year by his new team-mate, the Thai Alexander Albon, who was however forced into inactivity in F1 last year.
“You should not pay attention to everything that is written about me, he declared yesterday in an interview granted to the Journal. And I’m not the only one experiencing the same treatment. However, I realize that my results are not satisfactory. I have to do more.
“It’s a matter of trust,” he continues. I’m convinced that I can drive as fast as Alexander, whose learning experience behind the wheel of the new car was shorter. »
Dad’s contribution
The 26-year-old pilot, born in Montreal, is therefore the first to recognize that he must raise his level of piloting. His card shows three 16e places and one abandonment (by accident) in four participations in 2022.
It remains to be seen whether the British team is willing to release Latifi, whose financial support from his father, Michael, owner of the Sofina company, is a precious monetary asset.
The fake… marina
Social media took to the story as soon as it was realized that the organizers of the Miami Grand Prix had set up a fake marina on the site.
Our colleagues from the British network Sky Sports notably broadcast a report which shows real yachts docked near the temporary circuit, but resting on a plastic tarpaulin in the color of the water.
The idea is to reproduce the decor that was originally planned when the project to organize a Formula 1 race in Miami was born. For the record, the race was to be presented in the city center of this trendy city in South Florida. But, we quickly realized that the development of a race track at this location was impossible.
So we fell back on a more accessible location, Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins (NFL), which has a huge parking lot.
