Donald Glover presents the fourth and final season of his Atlanta series on FX today. In this, the crew returns from the European tour and wonders if Atlanta has changed or if they aren’t the same anymore…
Today, Thursday, September 15, the fourth and final season of the US series Atlanta celebrates its world premiere on FX. At the start there are two episodes from the ten-part final season. In Germany, the series will go online a few months later on Disney+, where you can currently stream the first three seasons.
Earn (Donald Glover), Alfred Miles aka Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield) and Van (Zazie Beetz) return to their hometown of Atlanta after their European tour. But the question is whether they have changed or whether they are the changed ones. As always, little can be said about the upcoming plot, but the preview shows some things that fans could look forward to. Earn reunites with the kids who once sold him lukewarm water and now want to show him their rap skills. Earn and Van take their daughter for a walk in the woods and they go to the recording studio. However, someone is shot at and we see a whiteface performance (?). Overall, the images result in the usual mixture of “WtF?!?‘ moments that define Glover’s FX series.
Speaking at the TCA Press Tour, Glover said last season’s motto was “just have more fun because you can do anything with the time you have left over.” He also believes he’s found the perfect song for the finale, which also captures the soul of the format.
As for Van, her complex feelings from the end of season 3 have not yet been processed, so they will be an issue in season 4 – but again, this applies to all characters.
In the third season, Paper Boi and Co were on a major European musical tour, which also left plenty of time for excursions. For example, to experiment with drugs, to try business (and fall flat on your face), or to have eccentric parties and meet strange people. In addition, there were also some digressions in which the main actors, if at all, were only marginal figures. Some socially relevant topics of modern America were brought into focus.
Seasons three and four were shot in one go after a four-year hiatus between seasons two and three. Donald Glover’s series has already won five Emmys since 2016.
