Executive Vice President of the Dubai Future Foundation, Abdulaziz Al-Jaziri, told Al-Khaleej:

Dubai: Hamdi Saad

The Dubai Future Foundation confirmed that the UAE’s strategic directions to achieve the highest global standards of sustainability qualify it to lead the world as a destination for investment and financing solutions and systems for preserving natural resources and employing them in favor of clean energy production, in addition to creating new investment sectors, most notably in industry, technology and sustainable agriculture, which will provide thousands of good job opportunities accordingly.

Abdulaziz Al-Jaziri, Executive Vice President of the Dubai Future Foundation, told Al-Khaleej: The UAE was the first to announce its commitment to a strategic initiative that works to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 when many countries in the region announced strategies to reach climate neutrality or zero in the coming decades.

$2.4 trillion

He added that the value of green bonds financed for environmental projects globally is expected to reach about $2.4 trillion, and that the green financing market in the Middle East and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries in particular could generate up to $2 trillion of cumulative GDP by 2030.

It could create more than a million jobs and encourage foreign direct investment, and while $1.2 trillion is currently being spent annually to meet existing climate commitments, this figure would have to quadruple in order to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Promote cooperation

He continued: The importance of strengthening cooperation between Emirati institutions to take advantage of promising opportunities to develop sustainability practices and preserve resources for the benefit of future generations, by exploring promising future prospects and possibilities in light of the global interest in combating climate change and adopting sustainable best practices, which coincides with the UAE’s hosting of the Conference of the Parties «COP28» 2023.

He said: “Dubai Future Foundation” is working to consolidate the city’s position and leadership in the cities of the future, according to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him.

The Foundation’s efforts can be used as a guide and catalyst for the development of creative ideas and individual and institutional innovations that contribute to creating a more sustainable future at various levels and in various sectors, as part of its commitment to allocate initiatives and programs to spread knowledge and introduce the latest trends for a better future for humanity. We hope that these efforts will contribute to the design and implementation of future solutions for a better tomorrow for future generations.

future opportunities

Al-Jaziri pointed out that the “Dubai Future Foundation” recently issued the “Future Opportunities Report: 50 Global Opportunities for 2023” with the aim of introducing governments and societies to the most promising opportunities in 5 main axes that include nature and sustainability, as well as health, community empowerment, future innovations, and cooperation.

Stimulating investments

The Foundation reviewed prospects for international cooperation to achieve climate neutrality, by stimulating investments and sharing costs to design, implement and apply multidisciplinary techniques to capture greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. And take advantage of renewable and clean energy sources, innovative materials and biochemicals, and bring about a comprehensive transformation of the energy production, transmission and use efficiency. The opportunity for climate neutrality in the future can also be associated with stopping emissions in the sustainable manufacturing sector, in addition to the use of advanced machine intelligence.

Mobility sector

Regarding the most prominent solutions and opportunities to enhance sustainability in the transportation sector, Al-Jazizi said: The data indicates that the volume of plastics or microplastic particles that are annually discharged into the waters of the seas and oceans is approximately 11 million car tires.

Regarding the importance of orientation to resource sustainability, Al-Jaziri explained that there is a promising possibility to use nanotechnologies to achieve further rationalization of water consumption in the agricultural sector in the future, noting that the agricultural sector accounts for about 3 quarters of the amount of water consumed globally, while food farming systems produce 11 billion tons annually of food and provide jobs for 4 billion people, but many agricultural areas where more than 3 billion people live suffer from water shortage.

Nanotechnologies

Advances in employing nanotechnologies allow the use of micronutrients and pesticides in agricultural crops to accelerate their growth, protect them from pests and reduce their need for large amounts of irrigation water. This revolutionary technology can also contribute to reducing dependence on non-renewable energy sources, in addition to regulating the irrigation process and improving soil quality. This will contribute to meeting the demand for agricultural products, which will have to be increased by 70% before 2050 to meet the growing demand for food globally.
