Legal Victory for Speech Therapy Reimbursement: A Game-Changer for Children with Dysphasia

It is the victory of David against Goliath, and a relief for thousands of parents whose children suffer from dysphasia, an oral language disorder. A family from Dison, near Verviers, won their legal case against their mutual insurance company and Inami. For 3 years, she fought to be entitled to reimbursement for speech therapy sessions for one of her sons, Bastien, who is now 13 years old.

As soon as he entered school, Bastien experienced difficulty expressing himself. “In kindergarten, we noticed problems with his speech“, remembers Sophie Balaes, her mother. “We then followed up with speech therapy for dyslexia and realized that it wasn’t working.“. Because Bastien is not dyslexic, a writing disorder, he suffers from dysphasia. A bad diagnosis made by health professionals but sanctioned by mutual insurance.” The mutual insurance company refused to reimburse us for speech therapy sessions for dysphasia because we had followed a year of speech therapy for dyslexia. However, you should know that these sessions cost 200 to 300 euros per month, which is difficult to afford without reimbursement. We were clearly penalized due to a bad diagnosis“.

Outraged, Bastien’s parents then went to court, which won their case, at first instance, then on appeal. Informed of this decision of the Liège Labor Court which now sets a precedent, other parents in the same situation then filed appeals in Huy, Verviers, Namur, Mons. L’Inami folds: From December 1, children misdiagnosed like Bastien – and there would be thousands in the case – will also be entitled to reimbursed speech therapy sessions. What Bastien has been benefiting from for several months, with success.
