At the last municipal council meeting, Véronique Vandegoor (DéFI) challenged the college about a recent change in legislation, which will force citizens and associations to change their habits. This was announced a long time ago and now the provision is in force: it is forbidden to use single-use cups.
Councilor Amarante wanted to know how things were going to go for the festivities organized by the City and its non-profit organizations, in particular Nivelles en fête which is organizing the carnival. Also wondering if sanctions would be applied for smaller-scale activities offered throughout the year by other associations.
The Festival alderman, Benoît Giroul, recalled that a first test for the use of reusable cups had been carried out in 2019, during the Niv’Estival. For Nivelles en fête, the organizing association, it was rather conclusive but the cafe owners were much less enthusiastic… They planned to test the use of biodegradable cups on a large scale in 2020. But Covid arrived and the project could not be implemented.
“In 2022 and 2023, most used their stock of single-use cups, which was still permitted by law, the alderman continued. major events for which the City must work with cafe owners: the carnival, and the Niv’Estival. But it is above all their suppliers, the brewers, who will have to think about putting things in place…”
During the 2023 edition of Niv’Estival, last July, the non-profit organization Nivelles en fête entered into a partnership with a brewer to serve all drinks in reusable cups on its stand. It went relatively well, so it’s possible…
As for small associations, according to the alderman, a good number of them have in fact already taken the plunge. They can also continue to use “glass glasses” during their small events.
As for the sanctions in the event of an infraction, they are provided for by law and the City does not intend to deviate from them. But a reminder of the new legislative provisions will be sent to association leaders to avoid unpleasant surprises, and the municipal newspaper will also relay this information.
