Link Between Migraines and Strokes: Study Reveals Higher Risk in Men and Women

A recent study revealed that men and women who suffer from migraines are more likely to have strokes.

The study was conducted by researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark, and its results were published in the “PLOS Medicine” journal, and it was reported by the website EurekAlert Early June.

Migraines are defined as bouts of headache associated with certain manifestations, such as sensitivity to light, sound, or movement. It is believed that people who suffer from migraines are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke before the age of 60.

Previous studies showed that “ischemic strokes” – which occur as a result of the blockage of the bloodstream with a clot that impedes its access – affect young women with migraines more than others.

It was not clear to the researchers whether women with migraines were more likely than men to have heart attacks and hemorrhagic strokes, which occur when an artery bursts in the brain.

The research team, led by researcher Cecilia Hvitfeld Vogelsang, studied; Danish national records from 1996 to 2018 for people between the ages of 18 and 60.

The next step was to compare the risk of heart attacks, ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes under the age of 60 in migraine patients and patients without migraines, according to the information they extracted from medical records.

The results of the study contradicted the results of previous studies. Data analysis showed that men and women with migraines are equally likely to have ischemic strokes.

But women with migraines have a slightly higher risk of heart attacks and hemorrhagic strokes than men with migraines and people without migraines.

In general, the results of the study indicate that women are more affected by migraine, especially since this disease is diagnosed more often in them.

The researchers pointed out that their reliance on drug information in identifying patients with migraine was lost to patients who did not receive drug treatment and therefore were not included in the study. Which may underestimate the effect of migraines on their health problems.

The researchers tried to show the importance of distinguishing people who are most susceptible to heart attacks and strokes, which may cause them long-term problems or may be a cause of death, and protect them from them with appropriate treatments.
