[周刊王CTWANT] As the COVID-19 epidemic continues, more and more clinical and research studies have shown that it has long-term effects on the organs and systems of a considerable proportion of recovered patients. The mainland team published the latest research online in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine on the 12th, tracking the health changes of 1,119 infected and discharged patients from Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital in several months of 2020, and concluded that until 2 years after infection, there are still 55% of the recovered patients Indicated at least one sequelae.

The mainland research team showed that regardless of the initial severity of the disease, the physical and mental health of discharged patients improved over time, with most returning to work within 2 years. However, the burden of symptomatic sequelae is still high. The health status of the respondents after 2 years is significantly lower than that of the general population. About half of them develop long COVID-19 symptoms within 2 years, and their quality of life is lower than that of people without long-term symptoms.

According to The Paper, in the past, similar studies around the world mainly had a relatively short follow-up time, no more than 1 year, and lacked comparison with the general population. The longest follow-up study of COVID-19 patients in the world so far in mainland China was completed by a team led by Professor Cao Bin of China-Japan Friendship Hospital and Professor Wang Jianwei of Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Outcomes: A Longitudinal Queue Study”.

The subjects of the study were selected from patients discharged from Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital with new coronary pneumonia from January 7 to May 29, 2020. Finally, 1119 people received face-to-face interviews 2 years after infection. Follow-up periods included 6 months, 12 months and 2 years.

Through the study, 68% of respondents reported having at least one sequelae 6 months after the initial onset of the disease, and until 2 years after infection, the proportion declined but remained at 55%.

The study also showed that patients discharged two years after onset were generally less healthy than the general population, with 31% reporting fatigue or muscle weakness and 31% having trouble sleeping. Compared with non-new coronary pneumonia respondents, the proportion of related symptoms was 5% and 14%, respectively. About 13% of those who recovered reported other symptoms such as joint pain, palpitations, dizziness and headaches.

Cao Bin said that the results of the study show that for a certain proportion of patients who have recovered from the new coronary pneumonia, although the initial infection may have been cleared, it will take more than two years to fully recover, especially those with long-term symptoms of new coronary pneumonia. Therefore, further exploration of rehabilitation programs is critical to recovery.
