Canadian YouTuber Makari Espe transformed her fitness routine by increasing her weightlifting frequency from two 20-minute sessions to five 30-minute workouts weekly over a four-week period, as reported by Womenshealthmag. The intensive regimen yielded strength gains across multiple exercises, alongside notable physical fatigue and soreness.
The Four-Week Workout Routine
Espe sourced her training programs from the Peloton app, utilizing a beginner five-day program for her first week followed by intermediate programs for the remaining three weeks. Her structured routine focused on working two large muscle groups per workout to allow adequate rest time between sessions, supplemented by scheduled rest days.
Measurably Stronger Results
To evaluate her progress, Espe conducted baseline strength tests before and after the 28-day challenge. Her results showed notable improvements:
- Plank duration increased from 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
- Wall sit performance rose from 1 minute to 2 minutes.
- Chin-ups doubled from 2 to 4.
- Push-ups increased from 10 to 15.
- Shoulder presses improved from 25 repetitions at 10 pounds to 25 repetitions at 15 pounds.
Espe Uses Active Recovery to Combat Muscle Soreness
The increased training frequency brought heightened physical fatigue and delayed-onset muscle soreness, which causes stiffness and tenderness as muscles repair and adapt. By week two, Espe reported extreme tiredness and severe soreness in her triceps, hamstrings, and legs. By week three, she described shoulder blade pain that felt like somebody hit me with a hammer.

To combat the discomfort without increasing her training load, Espe incorporated active recovery techniques including gentle cycling, swimming, and stretching. She noted that swimming provided a particularly beneficial effect on her sore muscles.
