Male Afghan presenters cover faces in solidarity with women

Male presenters protest against Taliban action by ordering female television presenters to cover their faces. Male journalists protested by wearing face masks in solidarity with their colleagues. Male presenters from several leading companies, including TOLOnews and 1TVNews, have launched a campaign on social media to share their photos using the hashtag #FreeHerFace.

Several global media outlets joined the campaign, with several female and male journalists covering their faces and tweeting selfies. They shared messages in support of women in Afghanistan and against the Taliban’s order. Earlier this month, Taliban officials ordered women presenters to cover their faces on TV.

The order has affected only a handful of women television presenters in the country. But it caused a huge social media response. Their order raises many concerns not only about the freedom of expression of women, but also about whether they can continue their work.

Earlier, Taliban leaders barred Afghan girls from pursuing secondary education. Women were ordered to visit parks in Kabul on separate days from men.
