Managing Traffic Jams: Peak Time Congestion on Flemish Motorways

2023-11-20 09:03:37

Monday morning was very busy on the roads. At peak time, around 8:30 a.m., there were around 260 kilometers of traffic jams on Flemish motorways, the Flemish Traffic Center reported. A dozen accidents caused inconvenience at different locations.

An accident occurred on the E19 towards Brussels near Mechelen-Nord shortly before 7 a.m. The way has since been cleared, but there are still many disruptions. “There were 15 kilometers of traffic jams; the motorists took two hours,” said Peter Bruyninckx, spokesperson for the Flemish Traffic Center. “Traffic was moving slowly.”

Two minor accidents on the E17 in Lokeren towards Ghent also caused numerous traffic jams during the morning rush hour. “A new accident occurred at 9 a.m.,” Mr. Bruyninckx said. “Traffic remains very heavy on this road. At 9:30 a.m., there were still 150 kilometers of traffic jams in Flanders.”

October and November are traditionally months of high congestion, says Bruyninckx. “However, it is difficult to identify a precise cause for this morning’s traffic jams.”
