A manhunt for a fugitive in North Carolina led cops to stumble upon a car thief who laid waste to trees and other vegetation in a wooded area as he tried to make his getaway, police say.
Deputies with the Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) went armed with an arrest warrant to the home of a wanted suspect in the Canal Road area late last month when they spotted Deyonta Wilson, 30 drawing attention to himself as he fled the scene in a stolen Ford Crown Victoria, officials said in a press release, according to WYFF.
“Wilson, who was driving a stolen Ford Crown Victoria, drew a great deal of attention to himself when he attempted to flee by using the stolen vehicle to ram a local resident’s fence gate and began victimizing assorted trees and shrubbery by driving through a heavily wooded area,” reads the statement from the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
The stolen car lacked off-road capabilities and Wilson reportedly got out of the driver’s seat and continued to flee on foot.
He was captured a short time later by deputies who gave chase and was taken to the Union County Detention Center, reports WYFF.
Wilson was charged with Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Resist, Delay, and Obstruct, Injury to Trees/Crops/Land, Second Degree Trespass, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, according to UCSO officials.
He was also charged with counts of felony probation violation and is being held on a $75,000 bond.
It was not immediately clear how much damage Wilson inflicted on the wooded area.
