Married marks distances with Vox for fear of electoral punishment

The PP tries to square the circle and although the polls have given it a Pyrrhic victory, far from the vast majority to which it aspired, it has not changed its plans: it wants to continue governing in Castilla y León.

He refuses the support of Vox, which with 13 deputies has become the main and almost the only viable partner to guarantee the necessary majority. He wants to govern alone – with 31 deputies, ten of the 41 necessary attorneys – without partners that condition him.

That is the conviction and also the need. Pablo Casado is not interested in agreeing with Vox, because it would harm his future aspirations, first in Andalusia and then in the general elections.

The party interprets that this alliance with the ultranationalists would give ammunition to the adversaries to attack him. Just yesterday, the PSOE candidate for the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Espadas, already stressed that if the next elections are won by Juanma Moreno, the future of Andalusia “goes through a PP allied with Vox.”

Thus, the objective is to govern alone, a claim that is not easy, given the squalid majority obtained. He needs Vox or others, and the latter are the ones he is going to look for, from Soria ¡Ya!, which has shown its willingness to negotiate with the PP, to X Ávila, who emerged from a split in the PP, and the Unión del Pueblo Leonés, perhaps the most difficult option, since they ask for the segregation of León from Castile.

The dilemma of joining forces with Abascal

In favor

An agreement with Vox that includes its presence in the Junta de Castilla y León has few things in its favor, according to the PP, although it would serve as an experimentation room for what a future government of Pablo Casado in Spain could be. Both for better and for worse, because the experience could uncover the true face of those of Abascal, they emphasize in the PP; the things that they can raise, as they have done now with the repeal of the Law to Fight Gender Violence in Castilla y León, so that citizens know what it means to vote for Vox. Or on the contrary, to see if the government is moderate and does not make the maximalist proposals that they presume now. By looking for favorable elements, in the PP they emphasize that the stability of the municipalities and the communities where the popular govern with the support of the extreme right would be guaranteed, since there is a risk, as has happened in Andalusia, that Vox blocks the governance of these institutions.

If he obtained that support, Fernández Mañueco would go to Vox or the PSOE to ask an already large majority to abstain, so as not to have to go to a repeat election.

Yesterday, the PP executive committee gave its full support to Fernández Mañueco to start talks with all the parties with the intention of being able to constitute “a strong, stable and solitary government. And he has our full support to carry it forward, with our principles always present”, Casado stressed.

It was not a novelty. Throughout the day yesterday, regional presidents and PP leaders closed ranks around Mañueco and Casado, with similar words.

The dilemma of joining forces with Abascal

Against

Everything that the PP sees in a possible agreement with Vox is negative. The incorporation of members of Abascal’s party to the Junta de Castilla y León, with Juan García-Gallardo as vice president, they are sure would affect the electoral expectations of the PP in the following elections. The first, those that have to be held before the end of the year in Andalusia, where Juanma Moreno Bonilla was invested thanks to the support of Vox, although at the moment he has withdrawn his trust, which has prevented him from approving the budgets for this year. But above all in the PP there is concern about what this may mean, as a ballast, for Pablo Casado, in his aspirations to preside over the government. The national leadership of the PP knows that he will only be president with a speech from the center, and a government agreement with Vox that includes a coalition government could make him lose part of the electorate that he needs and that he places himself in the center.

As always, however, Isabel Díaz Ayuso introduced the discordant note. When asked if she would agree with Vox, she repeated the speech of the others and added: “I would prefer to agree with those who are against those who kidnapped Ortega Lara – who is a Vox militant – than with parties that in my opinion are doing terrible damage to Spain. I would not agree with sanchismo”, assured the president of the Community of Madrid.

The communion of speeches was evident between Fernández Mañueco and Casado. In an attempt to silence the voices that suggested that they did not share the strategy, the president of the PP used the same words that Mañueco had used in the morning before the party leadership in Castilla y León, stating that the limits to the negotiation “are our principles”.

And among these he underlined his rejection of one of the conditions suggested by Abascal to reach an agreement: the repeal of the Gender Violence Law. “For us, equality is not negotiable, nor is territorial cohesion, nor regional integrity, nor integration in Europe”. And one more point, to underline his determination: “I am not in politics to get there however, wherever or to do whatever.”

Casado assured that his purpose is “to bring the great reformist and liberal project of the PP back to the Government”

Santiago Abascal yesterday extended his hand to the PP to negotiate in Castilla y León, without establishing conditions, although he did insist on entering the government, because the results obtained “compel us, they have voted for that, and the voters do not want this party to be Jiminy Cricket who is always in opposition” assured the leader of Vox.

However, Casado made it clear that for now he is not going to satisfy Vox’s wishes: “There are those who mistake their priorities and are more concerned with replacing the PP than with changing the government. The second, by themselves, is impossible for them, and the first will never happen.

Pedro Sánchez and the left did not escape Casado’s criticism either, who considers that no one can tell him with whom he can agree and with whom he cannot: “We are not going to allow people to lie and insult us with impunity at all times and everywhere” , said. And he added a warning: “Those who seek to destabilize this party prick the bone.”
