America’s auto manufacturing sector halted due to Detroit labor strike. 13,000 workers at three giant Detroit companies went on strike led by the United Auto Workers union. Their wage contract had expired at midnight on Thursday. Companies rejected the demand for a 36 percent wage hike in the face of rising prices. As per the previous announcement, the strike was initiated after the trade union leaders did not reach a decision in the discussion held with the employers. The organization has warned that 1.46 lakh workers in all the three factories will go on strike if the demand is not considered sympathetically. The workers at the General Motors factory in Missouri, the Ford factory in Michigan and the Stellantis Jeep factory in Ohio were absent from work. It is the first time in the 88-year history of the organization that the workers of all three establishments have boycotted work simultaneously. Joe Biden describes himself as the president who takes the most favorable position on the union in the history of the United States. The government is also worried that if the strike goes on, the issue will be discussed in the upcoming presidential election. There are 1.25 crore members in 60 labor unions in the US auto industry. AFL-CIO, the federation of unions, has also taken a favorable stand for the strike. Read on deshabhimani.com
