Mayo forward Cillian O’Connor has announced his retirement from intercounty football at age 34. The championship’s all-time leading scorer steps away after 15 seasons and 129 appearances, concluding his career just months after helping Mayo capture the Sam Maguire Cup in July 2026.
The announcement closes the chapter on a defining era for Mayo football. Representing Mayo GAA has been the greatest honour of my life, O’Connor said in his retirement statement.
O'Connor Breaks All-Time Championship Scoring Record
O’Connor first pulled on the green and red jersey for his senior debut in 2011 against London in Ruislip at just 19 years old, playing under then-manager James Horan. He quickly established himself as the team’s primary sharpshooter, earning Young Footballer of the Year honors in 2011 and 2012 before taking over the captaincy. In his first year as captain, Mayo reached the All Ireland Final while Dublin went on to claim the spoils on that occasion.

Over a decade and a half, his scoring exploits reshaped the record books. He surpassed Colm Cooper’s all-time championship scoring record in 2019, having picked up All-Star awards in 2014 and 2020.
Thank you to everyone who has played a part in the journey since October 2010. Straightforward, no. Exhilarating, yes. To leave with Mayo as All-Ireland champions is more satisfying than words can say.

Final Glory and Injury-Managed Return in 2026
Mounting injuries disrupted his later seasons, and he was ruled out of the following year’s campaign with injury when Mayo overcame the Dubs in the semi-final before being turned over by Tyrone in the decider. O’Connor ultimately opted out of the 2025 season entirely before returning when Andy Moran was installed ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Manager Andy Moran on O’Connor’s Legacy in the Mayo Dressing Room
Moran praised his former teammate turned manager, noting that O’Connor’s value extended far beyond his record-breaking scoring tallies.
His preparation, standards and commitment to the Mayo jersey were exceptional. For well over a decade, he carried enormous responsibility for this team and consistently delivered on the biggest days.
