Mayoral candidate withdraws because of Mogens Gade

In mid-January, Mogens Gade (V) – North Jutland’s longest-serving mayor – announced that he would not stand again as a mayoral candidate for Venstre in Jammerbugt Municipality for the municipal elections in 2025.

Since then, two candidates have been in play as heirs to the party’s candidacy for mayor.

Christian Hem (V) from Pandrup and Michael Krogsgaard from Aabybro.

But now two candidates have become one.

Michael Krogsgaard withdraws as a mayoral candidate and quits Venstre. Both parties confirm this in their respective press releases.

But the reason for the break is something the municipal politician and Venstre in Jammerbugt disagree about.

Mogens Chr. Gade will no longer stand at the head of Jammerbugt Venstre as a mayoral candidate for the next municipal election. However, he continues to make his candidacy for the local elections available to the party.

Mogens Gade stands in the way

Michael Krogsgaard wanted to stand at the head of Venstre in Jammerbugt Municipality with “the starting point and the desire for renewal”.

According to Michael Krogsgaard, there is a need, among other things, for “a renewal of the political work, less top management and more freedom for the individual committee chairmen”.

But according to the municipal politician, this is not possible if Mogens Gade stands again for the municipal elections in 2025 and is elected.

– I have great respect for the work that Mogens Gade has done, but I also think that the time has come for something new to happen, says Michael Krogsgaard.

However, the chairman of Venstre in Jammerbugt, Lisa Kronborg Sørensen, does not believe that Michael Krogsgaard’s argument is valid.

Everyone knew the premise

In a press release, the chairman makes it clear that it has been known since mid-January that Mayor Mogens Gade would make his candidacy available for the municipal elections in 2025.

If the Left in Jammerbugt Municipality wanted it.

– It has also been made clear that if the new candidate for Mayor did not want Mogens Gade
stood again as a candidate, he would of course not do it, says Lise Kronborg Sørensen in a press release according to Jammerbugt Posten.

– Everyone in the City Council group has known the premise, and everyone in the City Council group has had the opportunity
comment on the premise – both towards Mogens Gade, towards the group management and towards
the board in connection with the many meetings that have been held.

Michael Krogsgaard does not recognize that picture.

An argument invented for the occasion

Venstre in Jammerbugt has this morning released the news that there is now only one mayoral candidate for Venstre. In this connection, the chairman of Venstre in Jammerbugt challenges your justification for Mogens Gade’s candidacy.

Venstre believes that it has been agreed all along that if the mayoral candidate did not want Mogens Gade to stand again, he would withdraw. How does that relate to your reasoning for withdrawing?

– This is new to me, and it must be an argument Mogens Gade has invented for the situation that has arisen, says Michael Krogsgaard.

So it’s not an agreement you were aware of before your withdrawal?

– It has been reported from the start that Mogens Gade would run again, says Michael Krogsgaard.

So there wasn’t – to your knowledge – any buffer in between, where you could say to the other side that he is running again?

– It has been announced from the start that Mogens Gade will run again, and that is what I have dealt with, and that is why I make the decision that I do, says Michael Krogsgaard.

At the same time, Michael Krogsgaard has decided to resign from the party Venstre and is therefore independent.

He would like to continue in his post as chairman of the Technical and Environmental Committee. But it will ultimately be up to his political colleagues to decide whether it can be done.

Christian Hem is expected to be formally elected as the mayoral candidate for Venstre in Jammerbugt at a nomination meeting on 16 April.
