Medvedev threatened to miss Wimbledon because of his nationality

Russian Daniil Medvedev is at risk of missing out on the upcoming Wimbledon tournament due to talks between the British government and the All England Club to prevent the participation of Russian and Belarusian players who do not express their open opposition to President Vladimir Putin.

Medvedev currently leads the world rankings, but he will lose the lead to Serbian Novak Djokovic in the coming weeks at least due to his elimination from the third round of the Indian Wells Championship, knowing that he may regain it if he reaches the semi-finals of the Miami Masters 1000 points.

AndThe Russian player will not be able to participate in Wimbledon If it had not been agreed that he would participate under the neutral flag of the Russian and Belarusian players.

British Culture Secretary Nigel Huddleston said: “It’s an important issue because many countries do not allow Russian representatives to participate. However, this is more complicated in individual sports.”

“Absolutely, no one should be allowed to participate under the Russian flag,” he said. Lots of players have a variety of nationalities, and are certainly willing to compete with them or under a neutral flag. But we have to go further than this. We have to make sure they don’t support Putin, so we’ll look at other criteria.”
