Meeting of the liberals ended to discuss tax reform – Political Parties – Politics

The liberals finished the meeting of more than two hours in which they discussed the points with which they did not agree with the tax reform. Former President César Gaviria asks that the collection be reduced from 22 to 13 billion pesos.

“The Liberal Party does not agree to tax the pensions of Colombians,” said César Gaviria Trujillo.

(In context: These are the ‘buts’ that César Gaviria puts to the tax reform).

One of the main conclusions of the meeting was to create a commission of 4 congressmen so that what was stated by former President Gaviria is brought up for discussion with the speakers of the other parties.

They say they want to hear how much of a hearing those proposals have in the other congressmen and then meet next mondayday in which they will draw the final conclusions of the party and its position in the next tax debates.

What is clear is that there are about 20 points that the Liberal Party is not going to vote on as a block. They expect to vote one by one.

In addition, they agreed to a meeting of the assigned commission with members of the government, to present these points. From today they will seek to have that meeting.

The three main ones are:as pensions, taxing the middle class and the tax on hydrocarbons.

The document reads that “the reform project is taxing the pension twice.” “This double taxation occurs to the extent that the reform project is taxing (i) contributions to pension funds greater than an amount close to $1,300,000, and (ii) the pension of more than $9,500,000. For many people in this situation, part of the pension will be doubly taxed”, referring to the pensions.

On taxation of natural persons, the former president points out that the upper-middle class is hit hard. “People with incomes below $10 million will obtain a reduction in their taxation and people with incomes above this amount will have an increase in their taxation, which is especially concentrated in people with monthly income between 15 million and 75 million.”

In matters of taxes on the mining and hydrocarbons sector, Gaviria warned that it could affect the viability of companies and the economy of the regions. Specifically, he said that the project as it was approved in commissions “artificially increases taxable income, intends to force hydrocarbon companies to pay taxes on a theoretical basis that does not have the potential to increase the assets of these companies that, by constitutional mandate, correspond to them. to the Colombian State”.
