Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested Friday in Florida on federal charges of possessing child pornography, a case stemming from explicit images discovered in his California storage units and a Philippines home. The 82-year-old, a former Hollywood lighting director, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, with authorities alleging he possessed sexually explicit photographs of himself with prepubescent girls, CBS News reported.
The arrest caps an international investigation that began when his son, Thomas Markle Jr., reported finding hundreds, if not thousands, of child sexual abuse images at their father’s home in Cebu City, Philippines. The Philippine investigation and a separate FBI investigation ultimately led federal agents to two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had rented since 2008, according to a criminal complaint. The case has reignited scrutiny of the family.

The Storage Units and the International Trail of Evidence
Federal authorities executed search warrants on the two Los Angeles-area storage units last month, seizing approximately 78 items that contained suspected child sexual abuse images, including slides, film negatives, and books. Among the seized materials were at least 18 images that appear to constitute child pornography, according to an FBI affidavit. Two of the images depict an adult man, whom a witness known to Markle since the 1970s identified as him, with a nude prepubescent girl. A third image shows a nude prepubescent girl in a room that appears to be a motel room in the Philippines, the affidavit states.
The California investigation was a direct outgrowth of the probe in the Philippines. After Markle Jr. turned over his father’s personal items to police there, authorities uncovered more than 7,000 images and a video of underage girls and boys. “These images are deplorable and deeply, deeply disturbing,” Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said at a news conference in Manila. The materials found in the Philippines led investigators to the California storage units, which Markle had rented for nearly two decades, with the most recent payments made automatically last month.
A Family Fractured by Allegations and a Legal Battle
For Markle Sr., the arrest is the latest chapter in a long and public estrangement from his daughter. The relationship has been under intense media scrutiny since 2018, when he did not attend Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry. Meghan has consistently maintained that her distance from her father was to protect her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
“I have never downloaded anything like that in my life,” Markle Sr. told the Daily Mail in a denial of the Philippine allegations, which he dismissed as “sick lies.” His son, however, has cut ties completely.
Meghan herself has broken her silence, saying she was “deeply distressed” by the news. In a statement, she revealed that a letter containing “troubling allegations” about her father had been sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection.

Markle Sr to Appear in Federal Court
Markle Sr. was scheduled to make an initial appearance in federal court Friday afternoon in Tampa. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized the gravity of the charges. A key question heading into the legal proceedings is Markle’s mental state; he has been receiving medical care in the U.S. following a stroke and a leg amputation, and public reporting has suggested he could have dementia.
The case has also raised questions about the potential for victims. Essayli said there is no evidence of victims in the United States, based on the seized material, but the investigation is ongoing.
