AWhen economist Nicholas Eberstadt published Men without work in 2016, it received widespread publicity, including in this newspaper: Millions of prime working-age people, mostly men, are staying out of the labor market in the United States remote.
They are not looking for a job and are therefore excluded from the statistics. They do not appear if one disregards one indicator: the propensity to work, which describes the proportion of employed (including jobseekers) in the population of working age. The subject soon disappeared behind the sounds of other events. But the phenomenon remained.
