Mercato – Chelsea signs Argentinian Enzo Fernandez for 121 million euros, record in the Premier League

Portuguese club Benfica announced on Wednesday the sale of their Argentinian midfielder and world champion Enzo Fernandez to English club Chelsea for 121 million euros, a record for a transfer in the Premier League. According to the press, Fernandez signed with Chelsea until 2031.

The previous record in England was held by Manchester City during the transfer of Jack Grealish a year and a half ago (115 million euros). This is a tremendous added value for the Lisbon club which had spent ten times less last August to recruit him from River Plate.

300 million for this simple winter

Already courted by very big European clubs at the time, Fernandez had burst into the eyes of the whole world by winning the World Cup in Qatar with Argentina. Chelsea, for its part, has not yet communicated on this transfer, but it brings to more than 300 million euros the amount spent by the Blues this winter.

The Londoners had already spent 100 million euros, including bonuses, to secure the services of Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk, from Shakhtar Donetsk, or 40 million euros for Frenchman Benoît Badiashile. This sum comes on top of the more than 300 million euros already spent this summer to bring in, among others, the French, Wesley Fofana, from Leicester, Marco Cucurella from Brighton or Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.

Opposite, Chelsea withdrew less than around 60 million euros from the cumulative sales of Timo Werner to RB Leipzig, Ermerson to West Ham or Billy Gilmour to Brighton this summer, as well as that of Jorginho to Arsenal during the last days of the winter transfer window.
