Meteorologist Dominik Jung Warns of Temperature Drop and Early Snow in Germany

The mild autumn days that defined October are officially coming to an end across Germany, ushering in a noticeable chill, morning fog, and the prospect of freezing temperatures later in the week. According to the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), daytime temperatures on Wednesday will struggle to reach between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius, marking a significant drop from the warmer conditions seen earlier in the week.

Meteorologist Dominik Jung noted that regions that enjoyed highs of up to 20 degrees Celsius on Tuesday will see a sharp decline, with peak readings falling by roughly five degrees. The shift follows a lingering high-pressure system that continues to influence weather patterns, though stubborn morning haze and high fog are creating tricky conditions for drivers. Forecasters indicate that while the remainder of the week will largely stay dry, sunshine will break through only sporadically.

Temperature Drop and Frost Risk

The cooling trend will intensify significantly heading into Thursday. The DWD forecasts that overnight temperatures could plunge to as low as 2 degrees Celsius, bringing the likelihood of light ground frost, particularly across the southern parts of the country. Daytime skies on Thursday are expected to remain overcast in the northern and eastern regions, giving way to a mix of sun and clouds once morning mist clears. Höchstwerte are projected to hover around 8 degrees Celsius in persistent fog, reaching 10 to 14 degrees elsewhere, and up to 16 degrees along the Lower Rhine.

Jung pointed out that October has been unusually warm overall, making the current shift in weather patterns a stark transition. With colder polar air streaming into the region, forecasters warn that early November could even bring the first snowfall to elevations between 600 and 800 meters. The drop in temperatures also serves as a practical reminder for hobby gardeners to prepare frost-sensitive plants for the winter season ahead.
