MEXICO filed a lawsuit against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice over the attack on its embassy in Quito, wanting the South American country to be “frozen” from the United Nations (UN).

Mexico’s lawsuit asks that Ecuador be suspended from the UN unless it issues a public apology “acknowledging its violation of the principles and norms of international law,” Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena said.

“The goal is to guarantee the restoration of the moral damage suffered by the Mexican state and its citizens,” he said at a news conference.

Ecuadorian security forces stormed the embassy last Friday to arrest Ecuador’s former vice president Jorge Glas, who is wanted on corruption charges and has been granted asylum by Mexico.

The rare incursion into diplomatic territory sparked international condemnation and led Mexico to cut ties with Ecuador and withdraw its diplomats from the country.

Meanwhile, Ecuador’s president, Daniel Noboa, defended the raid on the embassy as a necessary measure to detain Glas as he was a flight risk, and expressed his readiness to “resolve any differences” with Mexico.

Several Latin American countries, Spain, the European Union, the United States and the head of the United Nations have condemned the embassy raid as a violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

Latin American leaders will hold a virtual conference next Tuesday to discuss the raid, Honduran President Xiomara Castro said.

They will consider proposals to “condemn Ecuador’s actions in the strongest terms” and possible sanctions, according to Castro, the current president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

On the other hand, Correa responded to X, saying: “Don’t be stupid, the only one who has betrayed the country and endangered the country’s security is (president) Daniel Noboa.” (AFP/Z-3)
