DECRYPTION – Sam Altman, abruptly dismissed from OpenAI by its administrators, will join Microsoft to lead a new entity. Many employees say they follow him there.

The weekend got off to a bad start for Satya Nadella. On Friday, shortly before 12:30 p.m., the CEO of Microsoft learned from the mouth of the OpenAI board of directors that the latter had unilaterally decided to dismiss its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, due to broken trust. A snub for Microsoft faced with a fait accompli, which has already invested more than 10 billion dollars to enable OpenAI to give birth to its powerful generative artificial intelligence models, as well as the ChatGPT conversational robot. An immense risk also for a group which has decided to rely on OpenAI technologies to develop, and sell much more expensively to companies, its Microsoft 365 office suite and its Windows operating system. According to a note published in June by Evercore ISI, these new AI-powered products from OpenAI could bring in $99 billion for Microsoft in 2027.
