Microsoft finalizes purchase of Activision Blizzard after 20 months

The soap opera finally came to an end, with a positive outcome for Microsoft. The company guaranteed today (13) the Activision Blizzard acquisition, taking a big step in its expansion within the video game industry. The negotiation has faced several challenges over the past few months, as Microsoft sought the necessary approvals to confirm the acquisition.

A Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), from the United Kingdom, ended the soap opera today with the last necessary approval. As a result, Activision Blizzard King was acquired by Microsoft for US$69 billion. With a post on Xbox Wire, Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, celebrated the acquisition and valued the franchises that are now part of the Xbox team.

Although games like Diablo 4 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 are not new to Game Pass in 2023, Activision Blizzard titles already have a guaranteed passport to Microsoft’s subscription service. Recently, the company itself confirmed that franchise games such as Call of Duty, Diablo, Crash and more will begin to appear in the catalog from 2024, in a gradual process.
