Over time, modern video games tend to become more and more imposing on the HDDs Console SSDs. And Microsoft has two solutions to fix this problem: a new Xbox with more storage and cheaper memory cards.

The new Xbox Series S.

The new version is a black variant (sorry, Carbon Black) from Xbox Series S goes from 512 GB to 1 TB of storage for 50 € more (350 € against 300 €). She is expected on September 1st and apart from the color, nothing changes. It is therefore an intermediate console, which does not offer the same power as the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 and which is aimed at those who still have a Full HD television.

Memory cards at WD

Microsoft has always operated differently from Sony on storage: while it is possible to replace the hard drive of PlayStation 3 and 4 and add an M.2 SSD in PlayStation 5, Microsoft sold a proprietary hard drive for Xbox 360, only allowed external USB for the Xbox One and is limited to proprietary memory cards for the XBox Series.

Until now, only Seagate offered memory cards for the Xbox Series, in a format similar to CFexpress (seen in some cameras) but made incompatible with them. The 2 TB version is for example $280, while the 512 GB and 1 TB versions are officially sold for $90 and $150 (€95 in France). It should be noted that Seagate cards seem to be out of stock at the majority of sellers currently.

The new range is in partnership with Seagate’s main competitor, Western Digital (WD) and the cards are part of the WD_Black range, for gamers. The format obviously remains the same, as do the prices: the WD_Black C50 de 500 Go is worth 140 € and the 1 TB version goes up to 190 €.

Given the high price of expansion cards, it is also more economical to turn to the new console with its terabyte of storage than to buy the 512 GB version with an extension… Finally, it should be noted that it there are alternatives noname : you can find adapters which allow to install an NVMe SSD in the expansion slot, but the compatibility is very low, because the consoles expect specific SSDs.
