Mikaela Shiffrin misses 83rd World Cup victory in Flachau – Vlhova wins, Dürr races to third place

Lena Dürr cheered exuberantly, Petra Vlhova shed a tear of joy – only for Mikaela Shiffrin, for once, it wasn’t enough for a big, overwhelming moment.

The 27-year-old American, who was second, missed her 83rd World Cup success by 0.43 seconds and thus missed the new victory record. The record is of course only a matter of time.

Behind the Slovakian Olympic champion Vlhova and the record hunter Shiffrin, Dürr again presented itself as a medal contender for the World Championships in Courchevel and Meribel (February 5 to 19).

Just like before the turn of the year, she finished third in the penultimate slalom before the title fights in France. With the fastest time in the final, she improved from fourth place. “It was great fun,” she said with a laugh on BR.

With the fastest time on the podium: Dürr’s crazy second run

Not only Dürr had every reason to be happy: Jessica Hilzinger (Oberstdorf) in eighth place and Emma Aicher (Mahlstetten) in ninth place completed an excellent team result – for the first time since November 2012 in Aspen, three German runners finished in the top ten in a slalom . “It’s brutal. I’m really proud of the girls,” said Dürr.

For Hilzinger and Aicher it was the best result of their World Cup careers – like Dürr and Andrea Filser (Wildsteig), who was only eliminated in the final, both met the association’s internal standard for participation in the World Cup.

In fact, the evening could have gone even better in front of the atmospheric backdrop of 13,200 spectators – Dürr missed the chance to fight for victory in the first run. She was ahead of her opponents at the last split but then got caught by a wave. “I then totally underestimated them,” she said and confessed, “I slept a bit there.”

Olympic champion Vlhova, on the other hand, skied two tactically clever runs on the treacherous, undulating slope. “Vlhova just couldn’t be bent today,” said three-time Olympic champion Maria Höfl-Riesch on BR and added: “It’s nice that there are still days when Mikaela Shiffrin can be beaten.”

Shiffrin had equaled the record of her former teammate Lindsey Vonn two days earlier in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Only the legendary Swede Ingemar Stenmark (86) has more World Cup victories.
