Miltos Tedoglou: “Mr. Vroutsis implemented our requests – I’m training for the first time at OAKA and I’m seeing a change” 2024-03-30 07:08:10

The indoor athletics training facility of OAKA was “transformed” within a few months into what all the athletes who passed through its gates wanted, as can be seen from what Miltos Tedoglou said, who never “chewed” his words, regarding the training conditions he had faced.

The improvement projects, costing €500,000 that were implemented in the last three months (€200,000 projects are still pending), transformed it into a modern one, capable of hosting our champions.

The Deputy Minister of Sports, Yiannis Vroutsis, performed an autopsy on Thursday at the renovated indoor track and field training facility of OAKA, with the change being commented on by everyone and seen in the smiles of Miltos Tentoglou, Nikol Kyriakopoulos, Konstantinos Douvalidis, coaches Giorgos Pomaski, Angelos Pavlakakis , Haris Karalis, Nikos Kolovos (coach of our Paralympic gold medalist, Nasos Gavelas), Christos Papadopoulos (federal of the national throwing teams), Kostas Gatsioudis and all those who met with the Minister of Sports at the indoor training facility.

The previous lack of heating, the buckets to collect the rainwater that passed through the problematic insulation and the generally worn space, are now a thing of the past.

“I saw the eyes of Miltos, Nicole and the other children shining with joy, for the improvement of the space, and this is the greatest satisfaction for me”, characteristically stated Mr. Vroutsis and continued:

“We proved that when there is political will, everything can be done. Three months ago, when I visited this place for the first time, I was ashamed of the conditions in which our athletes were training.

I committed, together with the management of OAKA, how we will open a new page for our athletes. We owe it to these guys, our champions, and we do. Step by step.

Today, three months later, the image of the indoor training facility has changed significantly and I thank everyone, especially the staff, for their contribution.

And because the enemy of the good is the best, other things have been set in motion, such as the ergometric center within the EKAE (cost €400,000), a 30-plus-year wait, which is expected to be implemented by the end of August 2024. By then we aspire to implement other projects inside the closed, but also in the surrounding area and in the open fields.

I am satisfied that the athletes hugged me and told me that they saw a huge jump, not like Tedoglou’s, a relatively good jump that changed the image of the closed training camp, as a whole.”

Our Olympic gold medalist in the long distance, Miltos Tedoglou, obviously satisfied with the works that were implemented and improved his training conditions, said: “In the last seven years that I have been training in the closed training facility of OAKA, it is the first time that I have seen a change. Mr. Vroutsis listened to our requests from the first moment and implemented them. The most important thing for me was the heating, which we have been asking for for years and I am completely satisfied. We thank the Minister very much for this”.

For his part, Miltos Tentoglou’s coach, Giorgos Pomaski, did not hide his satisfaction for “the communication we developed with the Minister from the first day. We highlighted our problems and Mr. Vroutsis took the important and essential ones and put them into practice. It was a surprise for me!”.

The Minister of Sports was accompanied by his partner and leading Greek Marathoner, Maria Polyzou, the president of OAKA, Gogo Phyrigou-Consolo, the Coordinating General Director, Konstantinos Halioris, members of the Directorate and employees.

During his autopsy, the Minister had the opportunity to watch the training of the athletes, to talk with them, to ask them about their new conditions of preparation, but also to hear what else concerns them.

Dismantling and removal of all old non-functional heaters and light fixtures.

Installation of six 60,000 BTU, closet-type air conditioners and restoration of stolen mains cables.

Local restoration of damage to the insulating membrane on the ceiling of the hall until the completion of the bidding process (amounting to €100,000) that has been announced for its complete replacement.

Construction of a roof on part of the roof of the training room to prevent water inflow into the warm-up corridor for horizontal jumps.

General oil painting and restoration of loose coatings on the brickwork on the ceiling and on the perimeter cladding of the training hall with rabotte timber.

Complete upgrade of the external and internal lighting in the training room by replacing the old lamps with new LED technology lamps, of high energy efficiency.

Installation of an electric bar to control the entry of vehicles into the facility.

Placement of independent toilets (WC) and changing rooms in auxiliary K-1.

Construction of fencing to separate the auxiliary fields K-1 (SEGAS) and K-2 (public).

Placement of a controlled entrance to the auxiliary field K2 from the surrounding area of the Stadium and at the same time facilitating the parking of the athletes’ vehicles.

Repair of metal facade and glass panes in the training room.
