Thiruvananthapuram: Public Education and Labor Minister V Sivankutty spoke on the phone with Dutch citizen Steven Asberg on the incident of insulting a foreigner on New Year’s Eve. Minister Steven was briefed on the steps taken by the government in the incident and the suspension of the Grade SI. Stevens will meet the minister at his official residence this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Grade SI Shaji of Kovalam police station was suspended in the incident. The action was taken on the instructions of DGP Anil Kant. The Station House Officer will also check if there is a fall. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had sought a report from the police on the incident. Minister PA Mohammad Riyaz also criticized the police action.
Steven, a Dutch national, was stopped by police in Kovalam last afternoon for asking for a bill. Steven dumped two bottles of liquor on the road after police said he could not carry alcohol without the bill. It was only after he went back and came with the bill that the police allowed him to take the third bottle.
