A 29-year-old immunocompromised man died 18 days after being diagnosed with monkeypox, becoming the first recorded monkeypox death in Vietnam.

Deputy Director of Health Nguyen Van Binh Chau said on the 24th that the patient was admitted to a tropical disease hospital after showing symptoms of fever and blisters for nine days. He later tested positive for monkeypox.

The patient also had a severely compromised immune system due to HIV. During treatment, he contracted a Candida infection and developed pneumonia, which later progressed to septic shock and multiple organ failure. The patient was treated with a ventilator, blood filtration, antibiotics and other medications. However, the patient died within 18 days due to severe infection.

This man is the first recorded death from monkeypox in Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City’s Tropical Disease Hospital is currently treating 20 people with monkeypox, 18 of whom also have HIV. Doctors said monkeypox spreads to people in similar ways to HIV, including through contact with infected blisters and sexual intercourse.

People who get monkeypox usually recover, but in people with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, cirrhosis, or diabetes, the disease often progresses to life-threatening levels. Serious complications include extensive damage to the skin, especially the mouth, eyes, and genital area, leading to further infections.

The wave of monkeypox infections began in May 2022 and appeared in countries that had never seen the virus before, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Belgium. There are more than 90,000 cases of infection confirmed to date. Mortality rates can be as high as 11%. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak an international health emergency on July 23, 2022, because infections have increased globally.

In October 2022, the first two cases of monkeypox infection were confirmed in Vietnam, but the patient contracted the virus abroad after returning from Dubai and was immediately quarantined upon returning to Vietnam. Vietnam currently has no vaccine or treatment for monkeypox.
