ALGIERS – The number of electronic payment operations (TPE) amounted to more than 1.7 million operations, during the first half of the current year, for a value of nearly 14 billion DA , according to data published by the Monetics Economic Interest Group (GIE Monetics), via its official website.
As such, the group’s figures show that the overall number of VSEs in operation until the first half of the year reached 49,916 devices, compared to 46,263 devices at the end of 2022.
The number of electronic payment cards in circulation has reached, according to the same source, more than 15.3 million bank cards and “Edahabia” cards specific to Algérie Poste (AP).
As for the payment activity on the internet, it exceeded 5.5 million operations with a total amount of more than 12.3 billion DA, spread over the activities of telecom, transport, insurance, biller, administrative service, service provider of service, sale of goods, sport and leisure.

The telecom sector was the most active in internet payment during the first half, with more than 4.1 million operations, compared to more than 464,000 operations for the sports and leisure sector, 444,000 operations for services, nearly 150,000 transactions for the transport sector, more than 281,000 transactions for invoice transactions, more than 21,000 transactions for the sale of services, approximately 16,000 transactions for insurance companies, as well as 4,522 transactions for the administrative department.
The GIE electronic banking group has some 370 web merchants who are members of the interbank electronic system, such as Sonelgaz, Algérie Télécom, Algérienne des eaux (ADE), mobile telephone companies, Air Algérie and insurance.
It should be noted that the total number of online transactions has exceeded, since the launch of this system in 2016 until June 2023, 27 million transactions, or some 49 billion Da, according to data from the group.
Mobile payments exceeded, it is specified, during the first half of the year, 16.6 million transactions, or 11.7 billion Da, while the number of money transfers by telephone reached 6.6 million operations, l equivalent of more than 85 billion Da.
The total number of withdrawal operations on ATMs exceeded, during the same period, 85.7 million transactions, for a value of more than 1600 billion Da, while the total number of ATMs increased from 3640 (end of 2022) to 3768 automatons.
Created in June 2014, the GIE Monétique group is made up of 18 banks in addition to Algérie Poste, and to which the Bank of Algeria contributes as a non-adherent member in order to ensure the compliance of systems, payment and current standards.
The GIE monétique aims to promote electronic banking by generalizing the use of electronic means of payment.
