At least 109 people have died in Rwanda, east Africa, due to heavy rainfall and flooding. There have been 95 deaths in the country’s western province, the province’s governor, François Habitegeko, told state broadcaster RBA on Wednesday. There are also at least 14 victims in the northern province.

According to the local newspaper “New Times”, the rain began on Tuesday evening. Numerous people were injured on Wednesday night. Dozens of homes were destroyed and streets were flooded, sources said. Emergency teams started rescue work on Wednesday morning.

In the rainy season, landslides occur again and again in the small landlocked country with almost 14 million inhabitants as well as in other East African countries. Rwanda is a popular tourist destination mainly because of its mountain gorillas, where the famous American primate researcher Dian Fossey researched the animals threatened with extinction.
