More than €600,000 spent so far on public inquiry into gold mine

Curraghinalt Gold Mine Inquiry Costing Almost £500,000

A proposed gold mine in County Tyrone is facing increasing scrutiny and cost overruns as a public inquiry grinds to a halt. The Curraghinalt Project, developed by Dalradian Gold Ltd., has sparked intense debate over its potential environmental and economic impacts. While supporters argue it could create thousands of jobs and bring billions to the Northern Ireland economy, opponents fear the project’s health and environmental consequences in a region classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Recurring Delays and Cost Concerns

The Planning Appeals Commission (PAC) inquiry, ordered in 2020 by then Infrastructure Minister Nichola mallon, has been plagued by delays and controversies.A previous adjournment in September 2024 stemmed from confusion surrounding water license approvals. The latest setback occurred earlier this year when the inquiry was suspended on January 15th due to regulatory breaches by the department for Infrastructure (DFI). the department failed to adequately notify the Irish government and Donegal County Council about a cross-border issue, jeopardizing the inquiry’s progress.

Commissioner Expresses Frustration

“It is indeed deeply regrettable that members of the PAC have been put in this position by the inaction of government departments,” Commissioner Jacqueline McParland stated during the hearing, adding that the inquiry “has been besieged with difficulties,” with meaningful costs and community disruption.

The PAC is currently assessing the situation and plans to provide an update in due course.

Clarity on Costs

Details released through a Freedom of Information request reveals that the inquiry has already cost nearly £478,159 (€575,000) of public funds. The majority of the cost (£212,957) is attributed to commissioner salaries, with administrative staff salaries accounting for another £219,089. Additionally, a sum of £10,955 was allocated for “security costs.”

Community Impact

Fidelma O’Kane, from the Save Our Sperrins group, which opposes the mine, expressed shock at the escalating costs. “Almost half a million,it’s remarkable,” she stated. “We are concerned about the potential environmental damage to the Sperrin Mountains, a vital natural resource for generations to come,” she added.

Ms. O’Kane highlighted the group’s efforts to participate in the inquiry, including arranging expert witnesses and navigating extensive legal documentation. The cancellations and delays have caused logistical headaches and financial strain for the community group.

government Response

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice described the inquiry as “unprecedented” in its complexity and scale. They emphasized the PAC’s independence and the NI Courts and tribunals Service’s role in providing financial and administrative support.

The future of the Curraghinalt Project remains uncertain. while Dalradian Gold Ltd.continues to champion its economic benefits, the ongoing inquiry and mounting costs underscore the complexity and controversy surrounding this proposed gold mine. The decision will ultimately impact the landscape, economy, and future of the Sperrins region for generations to come.

Costs and Delays Mounting in Curraghinalt Gold Mine Inquiry

Eamonn, thanks for joining us today. LetS dive right in. The public inquiry into the proposed Curraghinalt Gold Mine has been mired in delays and controversies, with costs rapidly escalating. Can you walk us through these developments?

Well, it’s been quiet a rollercoaster. The inquiry was ordered in 2020, and while it was supposed to be a thorough, transparent process, it’s faced numerous setbacks. We’ve had adjournments due to issues like water license approvals and even a suspension caused by departmental breaches. It’s been incredibly frustrating for everyone involved, especially given the environmental and economic implications of this project.

half a million pounds have been spent so far, with staff salaries and security costs making up a significant portion. How does that figure resonate with the community?

the community is a bit taken aback by the figure,to be honest.Almost half a million pounds spent, and we’re still nowhere near a resolution. People are concerned about where this money is going and what it means for the future of the Sperrins. We’ve been trying to participate in this inquiry, but the delays and cancellations have been challenging, both logistically and financially.

Let’s delve into the environmental concerns. Supporters argue the mine could bring significant economic benefits, but critics like you fear environmental damage. What are your primary concerns?

Our primary concern is the potential damage to the Sperrin Mountains, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. we worry about the impact on water quality, potential acid mine drainage, and the destruction of habitats. The economic benefits are frequently enough touted, but we must consider the long-term costs, not just the short-term gains. We believe that the environment and the tourist industry it supports should be prioritized over a temporary influx of cash.

What are your thoughts on the department’s response to these setbacks? Do you think they’re doing enough to address the concerns?

I think they could be doing more to reassure the community and address our concerns openly. They’ve described the inquiry as unprecedented in its complexity, but that’s not a reason to keep us in the dark. We deserve transparency and clear dialog about the process and the decisions being made.

If you could ask one thing of the Planning Appeals Commission, what would it be?

I would ask them to pause and consider the long-term impact of their decision on the Sperrin Mountains and the people who live here. This is not just about money; it’s about our heritage, our environment, and our future.
