Morocco’s Avocado Market: Growing Imports, Surging Exports, and Sustainable Solutions

In a context where avocado finds its place among the essential products in the household basket, Morocco seeks to adequately supply the market to meet an increasingly growing need.

Indeed, if Morocco was, at the end of 2022, the ninth world exporter of avocados, its imports of this fruit during the year 2023 were the most important in terms of volume compared to the last eight years, according to a report from “East Fruit”, specialized in the fruit and vegetable market.

If the Kingdom imported 4,000 tonnes of avocados before, the volume of its imports of this fruit has more than tripled to reach 13,000 tonnes in 2023, or a value of 8.5 million dollars.

“Peru, the world’s second largest exporter of avocados, is Morocco’s main supplier, representing 78% of the total volume of imports,” explains “East Fruit”.

This record figure comes in a context where avocado production has increased
by 40%, to reach a record of 60,000 tonnes in 2023. This positive yield is the result, according to producers, of the entry into production of yards planted in the last three years and the improvement of cultural practices.

In addition, the avocado has not, it seems, been strongly impacted by water stress, due to the fact that this fruit crop is concentrated in the regions of Gharb and Loukkos which have enormous reserves of groundwater. .

The level of production or even the quality of the product opens up new marketing horizons for avocado producers, allowing them to eye new markets, like the Scandinavian countries. The avocado export campaign began in mid-November, particularly for the “Hass” variety, which accounted for 95% of avocado exports over the past year.

As a reminder, Morocco’s avocado exports have increased dramatically, exceeding 23,000 tonnes during the first nine months of 2023, despite the water deficit. A problem that industry players are seeking to address through the adoption of modern water-saving technologies, such as underground drip irrigation and water recycling. Question of allowing Morocco to generate a stable income through the export of avocados, while relieving pressure on water resources.
