Mosaico Operation: The Fight Against Mafia in Belgium and Sicily

2023-11-12 18:14:33

Ln September 15, 2020, in the early hours of the morning, several judicial police in the country (under the supervision of the PJF of Liège) searched homes in Liège, Maasmechelen and La Louvière. Simultaneously, the same operation was taking place in the province of Agrigento, in Sicily, and more particularly in Favara. Code name: Mosaico. Objective: to put an end to the abuses of two mafia families who, for several years, have been settling scores between our two regions. In total: several murders and attempted murders had taken place.

Among those charged, we note the presence of Gerlando Russotto. As part of the first trial, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison at first instance, and ultimately received 5 years and 2 months on appeal.

It all started with a money debt linked to drug trafficking. If the investigators of the Sicilian DDA, the anti-mafia department, had focused on the homicides, the aspect linked to narcotics was in the hands of the Agrigento public prosecutor’s office, which opened another file, called “Mosaico bis”. This resulted in the indictment of… 26 people!

Several reports

Well-known names, others a little less so, but who are suspected of having participated directly or indirectly in the trafficking that started it all. Several weeks ago, the trial opened but has been repeatedly postponed. In question, purely administrative concerns. But next December, the preliminary hearing should finally be able to be held.

He who had already spent 3 years in preventive detention, part of which was under the electronic bracelet regime, is now free.

The hearing is set for December 19. It is not known how many defendants will appear in custody.
