The Mountain West Conference officially launched its 28th football season with an expanded footprint, welcoming NIU, North Dakota State, and UTEP to the league, themw.com reported.
Defensive Excellence and Historic Starts in the New-Look Conference
Air Force, New Mexico, and North Dakota State stand out as the only non-Autonomous 4 programs carrying just a single loss into Week 8. ESPN’s SP+ ratings reflect that strength, positioning New Mexico at No. 30 and North Dakota State at No. 35 nationally. No other non-A4 conference places multiple teams inside the top three of those metrics. On the field, New Mexico and North Dakota State occupy the top two spots in the entire Football Bowl Subdivision for fewest points allowed per game, surrendering just 10.5 and 11.3 points, respectively. That defensive clamping marks a first for the Mountain West, which has never before finished a season with two programs inside the national top five for scoring defense.
North Dakota State made history by winning its first five games as a full-fledged FBS program, a feat unmatched by any team in the last 45 seasons. The Bison also share the FBS lead with five victories by margins of 14 points or more, matching Oregon State among Group of 6 programs. Meanwhile, New Mexico protects a 10-game home winning streak at University Stadium, a run that stands as tied for the seventh-longest active streak in the country. The Lobos last dropped a home contest on Nov. 2, 2024, falling 45-49 to Wyoming. Their offense has also reached rare territory by scoring at least 60 points in multiple games this season—sharing that distinction with top-ranked Georgia and becoming the first Mountain West team to achieve the mark since 2018. Earlier on Sept. 19, the Lobos held a nationally ranked Oklahoma offense to just 14 points, marking the fewest points a Mountain West school has allowed on the road against a ranked A4 opponent since TCU held the Sooners to 10 points on Sept. 3, 2005.
Mountain West Opens New Replay Operations Center
Off the field, the conference has tightened its operational infrastructure by relocating its headquarters to Las Vegas and opening a state-of-the-art Replay Operations Center in July. The 600-square-foot facility houses seven replay stations, linking on-site officials directly to off-site reviewers via an integrated communications network. The setup incorporates multiple goal-line cameras installed across all Mountain West stadiums and maintains full game archives to support ongoing officiating development.
The conference also continues its mandatory player availability reporting policy for all regular-season games and the championship matchup. The framework requires standardized reporting to protect student-athlete privacy, reduce external pressure for inside information, ensure transparent competition, and address integrity standards related to sports wagering, with reports published publicly at TheMW.com.
Mountain West Leads Non-A4 Conferences in National Recognition
National recognition follows the on-field success, with Air Force, New Mexico, and North Dakota State all receiving votes in the national polls. That gives the Mountain West the most representation among non-A4 conferences. The league has placed at least one team in the national rankings every season since its formation in 1999. Preseason watch lists also reflect that depth, led by six conference standouts on the Maxwell Award Watch List—the highest total among non-A4 conferences.
Looking toward the postseason, UNLV enters the latter half of the schedule with a chance at conference history. If the Rebels qualify for the Mountain West Football Championship Game, they will become only the second program to appear in at least three consecutive league title games, joining Boise State’s four-year run from 2017 to 2020.
