New NASA satellite images reveal that the Solomon Islands’ Kavachi volcano has erupted. Two species of sharks live not far from this place.

L’NASA Earth Observatory released satellite images of the Kavachi volcano, one of the most active in the Pacific Ocean. As reported CNNthese images were taken by theOperational Land Imager 2 from the Landsat 9 satellite launched in September 2021. The images of this erupting volcano, located in the Solomon Islands, reveal a long plume of completely discolored water.

According to the American media, the Kavachi volcano is located 24 km south of Vangunu Island. It has even been nicknamed “Sharkcano” since specialists discovered that its crater is home to two species of sharks : the scalloped hammerhead shark and the silky shark. They are able to thrive in this extreme environment where the water is acidic and hot.

Finally, as NASA was able to explain, the Kavachi volcano is almost continuously erupting. Despite the extreme conditions on site, it is very interesting fertile ground for scientific research. The neighboring island is also nicknamed “Kavachi’s oven”.
