NASA’s Mars Exploration Robots on Their Own: Solar Conjunction Break

2023-11-13 16:02:13
A recent report revealed that NASA’s Mars exploration robots will be on their own for the next two weeks. The US space agency is waiting for a natural phenomenon to occur that will prevent normal communications, as Mars and Earth have reached positions in their orbits that place them on opposite sides of the sun, in an alignment known as solar conjunction. NASA says it is risky to try to send commands to its instruments on Mars because interference from the Sun might have a harmful effect. To prevent any problems, NASA is taking a planned break from giving commands until the planets move to more suitable positions. The pause began on Saturday and will continue until November 25. The solar conjunction with Mars occurs every two years, and while spacecraft will be able to send basic health updates home for most of the period. (agencies)
