SAN FRANCISCO –Almost exactly two years ago, Natalie Nakase sat across from Golden State owner Joe Lacob for her job interview to become the head coach of the WNBA's newest team, the Valkyries.
On Saturday, the Golden State Valkyries did just that, beating the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in Game 7 of the WNBA Finals to win their first title.
Expansion Draft Shaped Title Run
The Valkyries didn't win their first championship in five years.
During the 2024 expansion draft, the Valkyries acquired Veronica Burton, the gritty two-way guard, and Kayla Thornton, a reigning WNBA champion. These two became cornerstones of the franchise. They also added Cecilia Zandalasini, an Italian national.
The Valkyries made history in the 2025 postseason. They became the first expansion franchise in WNBA history to reach the playoffs in its first season.
The team was swept by the Minnesota Lynx in the first round. This outcome set up the foundation for future success. It also made Golden State an appealing destination for free agents.
Williams’ Role in Team’s Rise
Gabby Williams was part of Nyanin's original vision of the team. Nakase met with Williams in 2025 in Turkey to convince her to join Golden State.
Williams became the engine for Golden State's top-ranked defense. She also provided the scoring the Valkyries needed.
All of this experience led the Valkyries to their first title.
